The Scene
The friendly staff won't bat an eye at the normally well-heeled diner's flip-flops, and patrons don't seem to mind the server' slower island pace. The view from the wooden deck overlooking the bay can't be beat, while the cottage-like restaurant and bar feels perfectly matched to its beachy surroundings.
The Food
The kitchen turns out carefully composed meals that pay homage to the surrounding waters. A starter of Dungeness crab cakes, lightly fried and served on a bed of spicy ginger cabbage flecked with black sesame seeds, fares better than the somewhat thin lobster bisque. Generously proportioned entrees also brim with sea life. The linguine tosses shrimp, clams and mussels in a light, tangy tomato sauce, while the oven-roasted halibut sits atop an herb-heavy risotto mixed with little jewels of rock shrimp. The sweet-tart Key lime pie makes for a light, bathing suit-friendly finish.

The ExtrasThe Hideaway is attached to Housers Hotel and Bar. Unlike the restaurant, the bar is a raucous affair with cheap beer and a pool table attracting a crowd.

IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, WHY EAT ANYWHERE ELSE WHEN IN OCEAN BEACH. THERE FOOD IS SO DELICIOUS, IT'S RIDICULOUS; AND IT'S REAL TOO! Y'KNOW LIKE, TUNA THAT HASN'T BEEN TREATED WITH DYES, ALL DESSERTS MADE ON THE PREMISES, ETC. DON'T ASK FOR ANY SUBSTITUTIONS THOUGH, BECAUSE IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN, AND I MEAN THEY AREN'T KIDDING EITHER. DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A RESERVATION, IMPERATIVE!!!!!! TIPPING YOUR SERVER EVEN BEFORE YOU SIT MAY BE A GOOD WAY TO GET EXTRA ATTENTION, BUT DON'T EXPECT TO GET FAVORABLE TREATMENT WITH A HOSTESS IF YOU FORGET TO MAKE A RESERVATION. BON APPETIT :)
